My new Racer 2 (1 reply)

Got my new detector in today. Very pleased so far. I had about ten minutes to detect my back yard before the rain got here, found a 1978 dime, a 1937 penny, an old kid's ring, a steel mug about 10" down, a small rusted screw, a strand of copper wire, and a piece of cast aluminum from a motor a friend tore apart last summer. Pretty good for ten minutes in rock hard dry ground. most of the finds were in my garden, as my grass is too dry to detect without killing it. After I dug the penny I left the grass alone. I have not made a single good find with my ace, too much small foil and iron, but after ground balancing the Makro, it started picking up targets right away. Being able to mute the iron really helps. I have mine set on 7, might turn it off for a while just to see.

The Racer 2 seems to love Silver (4 replies)

Finds for the day .... not the best Silver I have ever found but the most in one day. 1899 Barber Quarter, Unknown date Barber Quarter 1916, 1220, 1925 Mercury Dime, Mangled barber Dime, Buffalo Head Nickle, 2 modern quarters (well 1960s) modern dime and some assorted pocket knives spoons, buckle and unknowns. Not bad for just waking up at 6am and deciding to try a spot. Humidity was murder but i was done by noon. This machine seems to really go off on silver readings ....just very clear repeatable sound and steady number readings.

I am a total beginner! I have never used a metaldetector before i got this wonderfull tool.
I got the detector on Friday last week, and took it to the beach today in North Zealand, Denmark
The finds was about 40 bottlecaps and 1 Pound of pure metalwaste. But i also found a nice little silver ring, and a 'Hello Kitty' token :o) and my first 5 kroner. (75 cent)

I was on the beach in about 2 hours and did not go far. I did stay in a very small area, and was only trying to get a fealing of the detector.
Amazing machine. I am hooked.

My last hunt at the same cornfield, in the same track.
This time i had the RC40 DD Coil attached. Disc. 20, 2 tone, gain 55, iron audio 2.
I was sweping the area very fast in about 2 hours. All my finds was in a depth of 1-3 inch down. All copper and brass.

Last time i was at the cornfield, same amount of time, i had a bit different settings with the RC29V DD coil. Disc. 20, 3 tone, gain 85. iron audio 2. My finds all trash, was in a depth of 7-12 inch.

I believe this machine is very good at distinguish between layers.

Just a thought .

Cors Shrew coil air test (no replies)

Received the Cors Shrew coil yesterday. Coil measure 3.5" X 6.5" DD. Tried it side by side to the Makro 4.6" X 5.1" OOR coil and the newer 5.5" round coil. I could tell no difference between the three depth wise on US coins, and I couldn't tell any difference between the Racer and the Racer 2. My test showed the following:
Quarter 9"
Dime 7.5"
Penny 7.5"
Nickel 6"

What I found interesting was that the Racers with the 5.5" X 10" and 7" X 11" coils will air test a nickel farther away than a penny, dime, or quarter, but the Racer will detect a penny, dime, or quarter farther away than a nickel with the smaller coils.

Just in case anyone's interested.

I found a new 1700's cellar hole that's conveniently on a friends aunt's property. She related the site has been hit by several detectorists over the years as it's very easy to spot driving by along the main road as I did. The stone chimney still stands tall. Like the last video, I saw pock marks of past detectorists scattered about & figured my best approach would be to put on a small coil & work the heavy square nail concentrations. In digging my first 1 piece cuff button, I noticed this site was pure sand! This is exciting because it keeps copper coins pristine! Even the 1700's "Rose head nails" that I was working around were not even rusty. A few scraps of lead & another flat button later, out flips a beautiful large cent dated 1841! It was an "iffy" signal in the same hole as this rosehead bent into a hook. As you can see the patina, just as I hoped, the sand kept this puppy nice! video soon....

RACER2 TONE BREAK & IRON AUDIO (6 replies)

Now that the Racer2's been out for a while and folks have had an opportunity to use it and test out the various settings, I'm curious to hear how folks are using the tone break and iron audio settings and how it's working for them?

I set mine up when I first got it in 3-tone, gain as high as I can run it (typically 98). tone break at 10 and 65 (65 to move old coins into the high tone window) and my iron audio is at 2. This seems to work well, but I've seen various comments whereas folks are having success with other settings hunting in iron infested sites, and am curious what people are having good luck with?

Brian

Today I hunted a site that was littered with iron, and that had some pretty high power lines nearby. The lines had so much going on that you could hear the crackling off them 50 yards away. Naturally that affected the Racer 2.

What I found was using Beach mode really cuts down on the noise from EMI. The constant pops might drive you nuts otherwise if you go anywhere near those lines, and reducing the gain helps a bit, but putting it in Beach mode it was actually pleasant to use. I was able to pull a deeper, soft sounding wheatie from in the iron after I quieted the machine down that way.

It also seems to me like Deep mode just amplifies the signals - that's what it seemed like going back over things with it in that mode. This way you'll hear the faint sounds better and the rest is a bit more amplified as well. I could be wrong, but that's how it seemed running it.

And the whole machine, right from the get go, I have to say reminds me of the F75 or T2. I mean it reacts like those machines and it's chatty like they are, but it's just faster effectively than either of them are. It's deep but I'm not sure it's deeper than the F75 in the ground here. Only testing would show that. It kind of seems like a "poor man's" F75. You can get the whole bundle and better performance in the iron for less money.

I like how the features on this are well thought out.

Bang for the buck I don't think it can be beaten. My learning curve on it was at first dig everything. Now I feel much more comfortable passing by certain signals.

After reading several reviews on it, I purchased the Makro Racer Pro Pack almost two years ago. Although I have not put in enough hours on it to become an expert, I feel very comfortable with the machine and like what it has found for me. While I initially hated that it didn't save settings like my other machines, I gradually came around to the realization that having to start from scratch every time actually forced me to consider why I was choosing each setting.

Then the Racer2 came out, causing quite a stir on this and other forums. It effectively reduced the resale value of my red Racer to about half of what I paid. Being retired now and on a much more limited budget, I am trying to figure out exactly what I would gain by selling detectors/blood/plasma to purchase the Racer2. If saving my settings is all I would gain, I will just muddle along with the red Racer!

So is there some other amazing feature I'm missing?

And, should I do what it takes to get the Racer2? Or just wait until the Impact comes out?

Thanks for your input!
