Looking for some opinions on the CF77, deciding on getting a Tejon,Vaquero,Racer, or a CF77. Have owned & used many Tesoro's including the Tejon and the Vaquero but always wanting to try something different. I am strictly a coin & jewelry hunter never any beach hunting.

5" Coil Setting Recommendations (2 replies)

I have some work to do to get my Racer 2 dialed in, but it's coming along bit by bit. The nice thing is that there aren't 1000 adjustments to make to get the detector to work. You can only go so far out of whack. and even then, the machine will STILL detect. So with some careful studying of the manual, some air tests to see and hear the different tones and going out in the field and seeing what comes out of the ground, I'm doing okay. My question is what is the recommended settings as far as Gain (I know it will vary depending on the conditions) and two tone, three tone, beach etc. when using the small 5" coil.. I turn up the gain to 90 when using the large coil but i think that will overwhelm the small coil so I dial it back to around 60 or so. People say that it's a crazy deep coil so I'd like to know what the successful people are using with it. I can't complain at all, I'm very happy with the machine, It's already found silver for me in a hunted to death side yard and today I snagged another quarter from the soccer field. I know if I refine my settings more, I will have better luck. I dug a lot of soda and beer cans today, (Our High School Kids are THIRSTY!) but they tend to fool even the "Sophisticated Three Frequency" machines from time to time.

racer 2 sensitiviy in pinpoint? (1 reply)

Quick question, are the pinpoint mode and all metal mode tied together? I'm getting some deeeep non-ferrous targets that don't pinpoint so well as it seems I need to bring up the sens. in pinpoint to match my hunting sens. Hit a deep dime yesterday, (merc) that in pinpoint only give one flash of 11 (depth reading) but compared to normal signal strength, the pinpoint was a little weak.
Now, I don't use pinpoint all the time as I can x it pretty close but I like to use pp as another tool. I've raised the sens. in all metal but it doesn't seem to affect pp. thanks

my XP Deus with 9" coil in FAST mode with reactivity set to 5???

If my Deus had a smaller coil I probably wouldn't be shopping. I hunt heavy iron homesteads and want ultimate separation . Who's the king? XP or Racer 2 with 5"Thanks

Had a few issues with my R2. Sent it back and nine days later I received a new detector. I did not ask for a new one. How can their service get any better? Wow!

Hello gents!!
New proud owner of the Fors relic, and was looking at the CoRe and also the racer series.
I found a gent that will sell me his gently user red racer pro pack for half what it costs new. Still has a year of warranty too.

So my question is, considering I own the relic already should I pick up the red racer 1 because it's a great deal or just wait for the newest nokta or save for racer2?

I like the layout of the racer series being more normal display.

Just curious if it will be a good add or a step down.
Thanks gents!!

Racer 2- Pulls out nice button from a bed of nails! :beers: (4 replies)

As mentioned, I have been enjoying the heck out the R2 with the small coil in my nail loaded cellar holes :) The coil I'm using is the 4.5" OOR off my red racer Pro Pack, but I now have the round one from the R2 pro pack to see if there's any difference. After a week of rain, I was itching to get out. So, driving home from work & I'd remembered another trashy Colonial foundation I'd forgotten about along the highway. Again, it was considered "hunted out", but I had the R2 in my car & small coil on it & pulled over. Some people don't have the patience to listen to every nail like I do, but I love knowing what's below. Plus, rather than just getting one long low tone blur like my Garrett AT iron audios, I'm seeing every single square nail & watching each individual 04 flash on my LCD. I ran the unit right along the foundation itself where most guys won't even dare try to hunt. Heard that little squeek amid all the grunts & also a 60's ID show. I love finding military buttons & out popped my first engineers button from the Civil War era. I recognized the eagle w. banner motif right way & was happy to add a new military button to my display case thanks to the R2 :detecting:

Racer 2 on the Beach (3 replies)

I finally got a chance to take my Racer 2 to the beach today. While there wasn't a soul around and no one has been down to this beach this season, I thought it would be a good time to see how the Racer2 handles Salt Water, Wet Salt Sand and Dry Sand..

If this detector was waterproof, Garrett would never sell another AT Pro...

I'll say that again;
If this detector was waterproof, Garrett would NEVER sell another AT Pro. No Falsing, it took a couple of tries to get it to ground balance, but once it did, it was rock solid the whole time. I didn't have to throttle it back, change my swing or make any other adjustments. I took my AT Pro as well so that I could compare on the exact same beach under the exact same conditions. Now My AT Pro is ok in the salt water despite what a lot of people claim (that the AT PRO can't be used in salt conditions.which is nonsense). The Makro Racer 2 is just that much better. ZERO Falsing, Accurate Depth, handles the transition from dry to wet sand to immersed and shore break water seamlessly. On the Wet sand I got a ground balance in 3 tries using the standard Beach Program. Once I had that ground balance, it was no problem to re-balance both in the water and out. My Ground balance wound up at 10 and on the AT Pro it was 17. I call that a pretty good match for two different manufacturers. Plus both machines run at different frequencies so there may be some variation there as well.

The Makro found a gas cap at about 14" (rang up a solid 85... I had to dig it right?...Didn't stop to think that a 14" "85" was PROBABLY not a quarter LOL!) It didn't' matter because the beach was SO quiet that I had to check a couple of times to make sure that the detector was on!

The AT PRO also had a decent showing but was far noisier than the Makro (Running Pro Zero with no discrimination makes for a noisy machine anyway). I was able to run full sensitivity (many people will tell you that you have to lower the sensitivity on the ATP for it to work on the beach... Sometimes, that is true but not always.). The ATP will also false a lot more but you learn to ignore it. When it DOES hit a good target, it's a solid response. Conditions were good and the ATP found a piece of a shipwreck that was too big to remove LOL...Again, ringing into the good numbers...

On the way off the beach, I stopped at the air station point and did a quick sweep, The Makro pulled a War Nickel out of the sand so once again, my record it unmarred...

Final analysis is that the Makro Racer 2 is only a tick mark away from the ATP on the beach because it's not waterproof. If you make a waterproof Racer, I want to be first in line...

I think that the next time I go to the beach, I'll take my V3i and see how it stacks up against the Racer 2

5" Racer 2 coil not very deep (4 replies)

I decided to try out the 5" coil that came with my Racer 2 Pro package after reading how sensitive and deep it is. I also watched the video from the manufacturer showing some pretty incredible air test distances. Now I'm quite happy with the performance on my stock large coil and was pretty excited to see how much better the small coil was going to be depth wise, but honestly, it's kind of a bust. In a clean air test, I can see MAYBE 6" on a quarter, less on penny, dime and nickel. I tried the Deep program and got maybe an extra inch or inch and a half, but no where near the numbers that I saw on the video. I'm wondering if there are some different settings that I may need to make to extract that performance from this small coil. It DID do a bit better on masked targets such as a nickel with a rusty nail on top of it. It detected all the coins (nickel , dime penny, quarter) with a nail either on top of the target or in very close proximity so that was a plus. I'm just a bit disappointed with the lack of real depth. Even in the ground, I would say that 5" is about the limit on this coil. My ground isn't particularly mineralized either so it's not a question of bad soil. Any ideas? Could I have a bad coil? I don't think so, but I'm not familiar enough with the coil to make that call.

Could any one with a red racer tell me if the detector has the notch feature or is that only on the racer 2 model.

Thanks

Racer 2 backlight question (3 replies)

According to the manual if you set the backlight on C1-5 it will stay on all the time. However, mine goes off after a short time unless it sees a target which is the exact same behavior I see when I set it to 1-5.. Again, I'm new to the machine so I ask just to be clear on the functions. At night, I like my backlight on continuously and am not worried about the small battery penalty for doing so.

The Makro Racer 2 is only half as good as my XP Deus (6 replies)

Three weeks ago I found a sweet 1856 Seated Liberty Dime up against a mesquite tree with my XP Deus but all I could find a few feet away with my Racer 2 was a lousy 1853 half dime. I'm still a nickel down.

I pounded this spot with the Deus and I found a lot of good items today with the 5" Racer 2 coil. I crawled in the iron and it delivered.

I'm still an XP Deus fanboy but after I've cleaned out my iron infested sites I'll be visiting them with the R2/5" for sure. I compared about 3 or 4 signals when I first started today and the XP just couldn't see them. Dug a lot of iron in the same hole as the good targets.

It's a good combo.

The main reasons I got the R2 was for the 5" coil, fast recovery and for the towel line at the beach. While I haven't tested yet in wet sand that is normally where I use my E Trac. I was able for my first hunt to go to the old Rock Hill fairgrounds that Winthrop College owns and is a fenced property. My hunting buddy has permission and over the last couple of years we have pulled a lot of silver from there. Lately silver finds have come to a halt but thought this would be the spot to start with. The ground changes from one area to another in minerals so I use ground tracking. You can watch the meter go up and down as you move around. I used the setup that JFlynn recommended and it was a noisy day to say the least. Yet moving slowly through I was able to pick out the high tones.
First high tone I called my friend over who was using a ET with a 6x8 and a tight coin pattern to see if the MD could see it. It nulled so opened it up to Quick Mask and just seeing iron yet the R2 with iron audio off and no descrim. but at 10 for iron you could plainly hear the high tone. Flipped the plug and there is a silver chain not balled up but spread out. He took the chained cleaned it in a water puddle and still the ET wouldn't see it no matter how you position the chain. Makes a statement there for sure. Short time later pulled a Rosie that only could see the 19 on at 4". But not even 2 ft from that I got another 64' Rosie with both being surrounded with trash yet the high tone was clear and repeatable. The ET didn't see them with the tight pattern but got a squeak on quick mask. He wouldn't have dug it. My friend went to his truck and got his 6" coil and slowed down. Still used the tight pattern and he got a lot more coins than I did but I had a bigger silver day. I sure we will be going back now more than ever as we had not gotten silver out of there the last 4 times we visited the site. The ground there is brutal on silver as you can see by the dull finish on the dimes.
Used 3 tone, 90 gain, 10 ID, o notch, o iron audio, 79 high tone break. I also can confirm that if it bounces in the 90's it is a nail in my case. Just a nail gives a broken 90 with the setting I was using but a solid one you should dig. Could be a larger silver coin. Post pics later. File size too big

I get all the way to the hunt site and pull out my Racer only to see a 5.5 x 10 coil flopping around. My ears on the coil broke in half and also the bolt snapped in half. This is the second bolt to break in half on me and the coil bolts are even the newer designed ones. I need to find who to contact about this here in the US as I missed my racer yesterday but luckily I had my deus with me.

Every time a new red hot detector comes out, I have to try it. First the machine goes thru my tough garden. Tells me alot right off the bat.....was this machine hype or the real deal. Then its tested at an old CS camp loaded in iron. After reading the reviews and watching videos, I bought a Racer2. Passed the garden test with an A+. Best machine to ever go thru garden unmasking iron. Then the big test......CS Camp. First let me list machines that have beat this camp hard........Tejon, Cibola, Deus, Red Heat, T2, F19, Blisstool, MXT, F75 LTD, Shadow X5, AT Gold, AT Pro, and CTX 3030. Tough, Tough group to hunt behind. Anyway, back to the CS camp......I went to the most iron infested area first and hunted real slow with the 10 x 5 DD coil. Some nice CS buttons came out of this area in the past. One killer button was missed by all the machines listed above....CS Rifleman Button!!! "R" button made me a believer!

I'm starting to think that the quality of the racer line isn't what i thought, now some of you may say I'm wrong but when i'm at a great spot and the coil seems too not stay put and when i slightly snug it and one of the nuts falls off and i look at it and its hallow i gotta say "are you kidding me" you can't even make these solid i start too scratch my head what else did they do to cut costs now with this said I'm wondering what others have done or used instead of the hallow coil bolt? I have tried a white's but it was to big for the coil ear holes any idea's or has Makro made the coil bolts better? thank you Sasquache

But no worries. Our friends over at metaldetectors.com are sending me a new one. The one I have won't ground balance for some reason.

I bought the R2 for the 5" coil so I won't have any down time.. I love my XP but the MR2 will find the goodies that my Deus just can't see.

Very pleased with the customer service backing this product.
